LEC, World Bank Advances Ambitious 250MW SP2 Hydropower Project

A major strategic meeting on the development and implementation of the ambitious SP2 Hydropower Project was convened on Monday at the Headquarters of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) in Waterside, Monrovia, bringing together key stakeholders from the Liberia Electricity Corporation, the World Bank, and the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The high-level engagement focused on advancing the roadmap, reducing implementation timelines, and executing parallel activities for the development of the SP2 Hydropower Plant, a transformational energy project expected to generate approximately 250 megawatts of electricity for Liberia. The project is positioned to be situated upstream of the St. Paul River in Fumah District, Bong County.

During the strategic session, technical presentations were delivered by the World Bank Team, outlining critical phases of the project, including technical design, implementation strategy, environmental and social considerations, and long-term infrastructure planning.

The SP2 Hydropower Project represents a significant milestone in Liberia’s pursuit of energy security, industrial growth, and sustainable economic transformation. Once completed, the hydropower facility is expected to substantially boost national generation capacity, improve electricity reliability, and support Liberia’s growing energy demand.

The meeting further reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Liberia (GOL), through LEC and the Ministry of Mines and Energy, alongside the World Bank and international development partners to drive forward strategic investments aimed at strengthening Liberia’s energy sector and expanding access to affordable and sustainable electricity nationwide.

The SP2 Hydropower Project is widely viewed as one of Liberia’s most ambitious future energy initiatives and is expected to play a critical role in powering the country’s long-term development agenda.
